proficientED
About Us
We support teachers in developing effective teaching practices needed to help their students become active learners engaged in productive struggle.
Our mission is to help teachers improve how they teach math to students in grades 4-12. As a company, we instill teachers with the teaching practice and professional attitudes needed to support underserved students, including at-risk learners, improve their understanding of math and advance seamlessly through high school.
We build the capacity of math educators to engage students in grade-level, rigorous mathematics by strengthening core instruction, placing data at the center of instructional decisions, and emphasizing academic language development.

OUR HISTORY
In 2004, we launched HigherSchool Tutoring to provide supplemental educational services to students in the Detroit Public Schools; the Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Prince George’s County Public Schools; and the DC Public Schools. Our tutors helped students establish a firm foundation in core subjects, score higher on state and national assessments and develop the skills needed to perform on grade level.
HigherSchool Tutoring was one of the first companies in the mid-Atlantic region to implement differentiated instruction in mixed ability classrooms as well as blended instruction, which combined asynchronous online learning with live instruction.
In 2009 we created HigherSchool Instructional Services, which provided supplemental instruction, professional development, counseling and parent involvement services to Title I schools in the New York City Department of Education. With an annual enrollment exceeding 8,000 students in three boroughs, HigherSchool became one of the largest supplemental instructional services programs for Title I students in New York. It was later expanded to the School District of Philadelphia in 2017. HigherSchool was purchased in 2020 by Nelnet, a national educational services provider and servicer of student loans for the U.S. Department of Education.
We founded CollegeReadyMath in 2018 to offer a complete series of supplemental, online algebra video lessons for secondary and post-secondary students. In 2023, we created proficientED, a professional learning program designed to help math teachers improve the quality of their instructional practice and implement more effective teaching strategies.
2002: HigherSchool Publishing Company was founded and later published The Parent’s Guide to Better Grades, 7 Steps to Improve Your Child’s Academic Performance. Developed as a resource for Title I parents who attended our parent involvement workshops.
